October 2 Farm Update

Leffler Family Farms’ October 2nd Farm Update
——————————————————————–
Final pick up for Peak Season and Regular Season is this week!!!
Please remember to grab your share this week.  It is the final week of delivery for Regular and Peak Season members.
Reminder to communicate with your host
As we finish Extended Season, just a reminder that if something comes up or if you need to change your pickup time please contact your host to see if they can accommodate it.
Big thanks from our family and farm
We would like to thank every CSA member for their support this season.  We truly could not have accomplished growing what we did without your support!  We would also like to thank you all for hanging in there with us after the bad hail storm in early August.  Those five minutes of hail really changed how the remainder of the season turned out.  We lost a few crops, but also saw the potential that exists if we luck out with some good weather.  We are very optimistic for next season and hope you will join us again for the ride!

Around the Farm…..
It really is amazing to see how quickly things change in Northern Colorado, and Fall is definitely in the air.  We had our first bit of frost on the farm early Saturday morning.  The temperature dropped down to 38 degrees Fahrenheit , which affected the delicate plants such as basil, squash and peppers.  The rest of the week has been really nice, so things are still trying to grow.  We are supposed to get snow on Friday with lows in the upper 20’s, which will pretty much mark the end of the season.  Some of the root crop can withstand those temps so Extended Season members will still have beets, carrots and radishes in their shares.

2014 CSA memberships soon available
We hope you enjoyed the harvest this season and will join us again for the 2014 season.  We have big plans for next season and plan on structuring the CSA a little differently.  We are trying to be more efficient across the board and learned this year that we need to simplify things in order to do so.  We also learned that delivering your veggies is almost as challenging as growing them.  Next season we will only be offering Regular season CSA shares (18 week season) and might limit our delivery locations as well.  Please remember that signing up early helps us make decisions for the CSA and the next season.  It also helps us employ our guys year round which is important to our farms sustainability.

Winter CSA shares now available
Sign up on our website today for the 2013/2014 Winter CSA share!  The cost of each share is $375 and we will have 7 weeks of distribution from November thru January.  If you loved the sweet corn this season then sign up for the Winter Share.  We are currently in the works of processing and freezing our sweet corn which will be the backbone of each week’s share.  We will also have our dry beans, pesto, popcorn, winter squash, potatoes, beets, carrots, radish, and hopefully greens included in the shares.  With the funds generated through Winter CSA shares we are going to start constructing two big greenhouses for winter/early spring production and hopefully be able to include lots of different cold tolerant greens in this seasons shares.  Nothing like a fresh, locally grown salad in January!
