More Markets Starting this Week
The Larimer County Farmer’s Market starts tomorrow, 5/19 and will run from 8-12.  Located in the Larimer County Courthouse Parking Lot in Old Town Ft. Collins, this market is one of the oldest in Colorado.  It will begin two weeks earlier than usual this year.  An encouraging sign that fresh, local food continues to be a priority in our community.  http://www.localharvest.org/larimer-county-farmers-market-M1697 for more information.
Old South Pearl Street, Denver starts this Sunday, 5/20 from 9-1.  The Old South Pearl Street Market is located in one of Denver’s most historical shopping districts, and hosts over 60 vendors each week.  Live music and it’s beautiful location make this market fun and unique.  http://www.southpearlstreet.com/events.html#fm for directions and more information.
You can also continue to find us at Cherry Creek and Denver Urban Homesteading Indoor Market’s Saturday AM

Baby Beet Greens

A delicious and nutritious seasonal treat!  Baby beet greens are wonderful fresh or cooked.  We like to eat them fresh in salads or sauteed.  Add heavy cream after sauteing and you get a beautiful pink sauce; so pretty and so yummy!  Their flavor is reminiscent of spinach or Swiss chard, incredibly fresh and slightly salty.  A must try if you’ve never had them.  Available for a very limited time at market or by order for $8.00/lb.

Resourceful Weed Control
We recycled plastic from a nearby silage pit and an old roll of fencing to make plastic mulch and stakes to hold it in place.  This particular plastic is white on one side and black on the other.  Placing the white side up will help keep cool weather crops cool, and black side up will keep heat loving plants warmer – perfect!  The plastic is used to protect silage from winter conditions and when spring comes it’s thrown away.  It took a little cleaning, but it was otherwise in fine condition for our needs.  Recycle, Reuse, Reduce!

CSA
Expect plenty of greens this week in your CSA share.   The first few weeks of CSA harvest have been out of our small 12′ x 28′ greenhouse.  This week we are finally picking a few veggies out of the field:  baby spinach, baby lettuce mix, baby rainbow chard, magenta spreen, edible chrysanthemum, and lots of baby beet greens (red, golden and pink).  Another treat is the early green garlic.  Simply cut the small bulbs off the end and saute them up with your spinach in a little olive oil.  They are incredible, mild and sweet.

Spotlight: Magenta Spreen
Magenta Spreen is a new green in LFF’s mix this year.  We have welcomed the new addition for it’s mild flavor and beautiful color.  It is in the same family as spinach, beets and chard, but is more mild in flavor.  Read more at   http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/12/17/HOG3IG84U71.DTL
