First planting of edamame, peas, garbanzo and fava beans is up!
This season we are growing three varieties of edamame: Envy, Midori Giant and Black Jet. Envy are a short, compact bush variety with small pods while Midori Giant are semi-runners with large pods. Both are amazing for fresh eating in about 70-75 days. Black Jet is new to the farm this season. The bean is dark black and can be eaten fresh but are better used as dry beans.
These are not your average garbanzos beans! Given to us from a neighbor, our garbanzo bean seed originated from Michuacan Mexico. This variety is meant to be eaten when they are green. All you have to do is toast up the pods in a pan then eat them like edamame. Look for the recipe later in the season when they get close to harvest.
We are also growing three different types of peas this year, two varieties of sugar snap peas and one variety of shelling peas. Shelling peas are another new veggie that we are attempting this season. Snap peas should be ready in about a month but only in limited quantities.
Windsor Fava Beans are an “Old World” bean that have been gaining popularity within the last few years in the US. It is an English variety with pods containing 3-5 large 1″ fresh green shell beans. Favas prefer cool, mild conditions making them suitable for early spring planting.

Do blue eggs come from blue chickens? Nope, they come from Ameraucanas. Ameraucanas are an American breed derived from the South American Araucanas. They have pea combs, cheek feathers, and greenish black legs. Besides their beautiful blue eggs, we love our Ameraucanas for their gentle, friendly demeanor’s. Another advantage is that they are well adapted to Colorado winters with their small pea combs.
